Cherries were first recorded to have a pleasing taste by Roman conquerors, Greek citizens and Chinese noblemen. In the 1600s, early settlers brought cherries to America by ship. Later, French colonists from Normandy planted pits along the Saint Lawrence River and in the Great Lakes area.

Modern day cherry production began in Michigan in the mid-1800s. This area proved to be ideal for growing cherries thanks to Lake Michigan, which tempers Artic winds in winter and cools the orchards in summer.
