About 6000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians developed bread. They observed that if the bread sat out in the warm Egyptian climate, it would rise. If baked it would retain its shape. Further, if they left the baked bread out longer in the warm air, it would become hard and unpleasant to eat, but last longer. This is the earliest method of toasting; it was also the earliest means of preserving bread. The Romans spread the idea of toast throughout Europe, even into Britain, and the colonists brought toast to the Americas. The word 'toast,' in fact, comes from the Latin word “tostum,” meaning scorch or burn. Toast is essentially burnt bread, so the name makes sense!
