What is a magnifying glass?
Looking through a magnifying glass, little objects appear much larger. Young children delight in looking at tiny creatures. A magnifying glass has a convex lens, which is thin at the edge and thicker towards the center. The lens of each magnifying glass has a specific focal point. What does the focal length mean?
Imagine the following: The incoming light hits the lens of your magnifying glass. The rays of light are deflected by the curvature of the lens in such a way that they meet again on the other side of the lens in one single point. This is called the focal point.
The distance between the focal point and the lens is called the focal length. In the case of this magnifying glass, all deflected rays of light meet at a distance of 16 cm on the other side of the magnifying glass. Thus, the focal point is 16 cm from the lens.
All objects within the focal length can be seen sharply. All objects beyond the focal length will appear blurred.
