This compass is a child-friendly, technical tool used to determine four cardinal points. It consists of three parts:
- a red wooden cases with a north marker and blue marking line
- the disk is subdivided into 360 degrees and shows the cardinal points
- two magnetic needles
The two-colored, magnetic rotary needle always points to the north. North is marked on the compass casing.
How does a compass work?
The earth works like a huge magnet. The Earth's core consists of molten steel. Because of the rotation of the earth, electron flows are generated in this molten core. This compound creates a huge magnet and thus a North and South pole.
Tiny, movable steel particles, like a magnetic compass needle, direct themselves towards the poles of the Earth. The magnetic poles can change their positions and there don't always coincided exactly with the geographical poles of the Earth. This erratic indication (about 5 degrees) is called "declination" and should be taken into account when using a modern compass.
